Between dystopia and utopia, we propose a new path, which we call protopia.
Dystopia has become largely dominant in science fiction in recent decades, with works alerting us to the risks faced by humanity in more or less distant futures. It has given rise to some magnificent achievements, and fully fulfilled its role as a “whistleblower”.
Utopia, which also includes major works, has become more discreet, but still retains its dream dynamic, its driving force for the improvement of our societies.
Protopia inherits the objectives of utopia, while being aware of the difficulties in achieving it. It is a contemporary version of utopia, its actualization for our time.
More dynamic, protopia is a work in progress, which understands that the ideal society is never a fixed place but a process of continuous improvement, step by step, which relies on our creative capacity.
Protopia is conceived as a prototype of the future, in an experimental and non-dogmatic approach. It offers alternative possibilities to dystopian perspectives, while taking into account the dangers that threaten our societies.
From our point of view, protopia can even be a form of art that inspires the creation of future societies, and already transforms the present at the very moment the work meets the viewer.
